Brent Ottaway has strong ties to Western Pennsylvania and a life-long history of service to the community. Born and raised in Corry, his father worked as an insurance agent, and his mother owned and managed a gift shop. Brent’s first foray into politics was as senior class president of Corry Area High School. As an undergraduate at Grove City College, Brett continued to serve in leadership roles as president of the Kappa Alpha Phi fraternity, news director of the radio station WSAJ, and again as senior class president. He was also active in the college’s theater community and in journalism, drawing political cartoons for the local newspaper Allied News.
Since 1990, Brent has been on the faculty at Saint Francis University, and throughout his career, Brent has shared his passions for education, journalism, and public service with his students and community. At Saint Francis, he has served on the Faculty Senate as Senate President and Secretary-Treasurer, and has been the Faculty Athletics Representative. He has coached numerous student sports teams and volunteered at local schools, advising student newspapers and other clubs. He has been a member of the board of directors at Penn-Mont Academy Montessori School and the board vice president for the Hollidaysburg Area School District, serving as the chair of the Policy Committee and as a member of the Safe Schools Committee, Non-bargaining Employee Compensation Committee, Finance Committee, and Wellness Committee. Elsewhere in the community, Brent was the Master of Ceremonies for the Hollidaysburg Area YMCA Dysart Park facilities dedication, is the co-founder of the Altoona Area chapter of Toastmasters International, and has served for many years on the Hollidaysburg Free Public Library Board of Directors. He was able to combine his interest in photography with his love of local history by working as the videographer for Our Town: Altoona, produced by WPSU-TV (PBS).
With his wife Ellen, Brent has raised five children in Hollidaysburg, and is dedicated to improving education and public services in District 13.
